Some days, doing ‘the best we can’ may still fall short of what we would like to be able to do, but life isn’t perfect – on any front – and doing what we can with what we have is the most we should expect of ourselves or anyone else.
We live in a world in which we need to share responsibility. It’s easy to say, ‘It’s not my child, not my community, not my world, not my problem.’ Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.
There are so many things I could say about this day, I love being a woman, and I especially love being the woman I am. This was made possible by many people in my life, but since comics were such a huge influence on me, I want to shout out one special lady in particular…Tank Girl.
Despite her solely illustrated nature, she taught me a lot about being myself. When I saw the movie as a kid, I thought, man that girl is tough. I’m want to be tough. Then I started reading the comic books (though some were inappropriate for my age) and I saw her be herself with no apologies over and over again. Standing up for her friends and for what she believed in, no matter what anyone else says. Doing what she knows she wants to do no matter how unconventional it may seem. She isn’t afraid of anything and isn’t looking for approval from anyone.
Tank Girl is just one of the many women that gave me the confidence and strength to be me. Thank you Tank Girl.
